Queen’s Park – NDP MPP Peter Tabuns said the announced closure of the Progress Child CareCentre in Scarborough is the result of the McGuinty Liberals' failure to put in place sustainable funding for child care in Ontario.

“Child care centres have been chronically underfunded by the McGuinty Liberals,” said Tabuns. “Now, with four and five year-olds leaving for full-day kindergarten,child care centres across the province are in danger of closing.”

A report released last month by the Ontario Municipal Social Services Agency found that 200 child care centres across Ontario serving more than 8,000 children& were at immediate risk of closing. 

“Working parents need reliable and affordable child care,” said Tabuns. “Instead, under the McGuinty government they have suffered rising fees, qualified staff shortages and sudden closures like the latest one in Scarborough. Premier McGuinty and Mayor Ford need to sit down together and save this centre”
