Feds taking over Highway 413 assessment a step forward in NDP plan to scrap the highway

Ontario' s NDP will not build environmentally destructive highway

QUEEN'S PARK — NDP Environment critic MPP Sandy Shaw responded to news the federal government will take over the environmental assessment of Doug Ford's planned Highway 413 with the following statement:

"It is hopeful to see the federal government take over the environmental assessment of Highway 413, which I believe is a step towards the best outcome — to see the scheme to have a useless highway that would cut through the Greenbelt scrapped.

A huge amount of credit for this development goes to the project's vocal opponents: the environmental advocates, community groups and municipal councils that have called for the highway's cancellation.

The proposed Highway 413 is environmentally dangerous and wasteful, shaving a measly 30 seconds off commutes while increasing harmful greenhouse gas emissions and cutting through the Greenbelt and important agricultural land.

The NDP applauds the federal government's decision to take the environmental assessment out of the Ford government’s hands.  Ontario’s NDP is committed to scrapping this dangerous and wasteful project, in addition to the Bradford Bypass, which would carve through farmland and imperil at-risk species."
