NDP calls for heritage building reprieve to be extended

QUEEN’S PARK — Following days of activism, opposition and proposing alternatives, Toronto Centre’s NDP MPP Suze Morrison issued the following statement in response to news that the Ford government will pause its progress on demolishing the heritage Foundry buildings until Wednesday:

“I want to thank the community members that have stood together with me to oppose the government’s attack on our community. Together, we are elated by this small victory. No further demolition activity should take place on this land until a proper consultation with the community and city officials have taken place — and that can’t possibly be concluded before Wednesday.”

The NDP has been critical of Minister’s Zoning Orders (MZOs) like the one the Ford government is using to demolish the Foundry buildings without warning or consultation. MZOs overrule local planning authority, and Doug Ford has used them at least 19 times to the financial benefit of insiders and donors to the PC Party.
