QUEEN'S PARK — NDP MPP Suze Morrison, critic for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Response, made the following statement on the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls:
“Today we honour the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people and support their grieving families and communities.
This year many Ontarians have had to confront the impact of the historical genocide that has targeted Indigenous people for generations. We cannot simply move on from these truths without action. Today and every day, we must address the root causes of colonial violence in our society.
Ontario’s Pathways to Safety plan and the federal action plan in response to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls' findings cannot just sit on the shelf. The governments of Canada and Ontario must acknowledge their responsibility for the perpetuation of gender-based violence, racism and misogyny experienced by Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people.
The Ontario NDP is committed to fighting for justice for Indigenous people. We will continue to demand that the Ford government take action to save lives and increase safety for Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people.”
