QUEEN'S PARK – During a press conference at Queen's Park, Ontario, NDP MPP Guy Bourgouin and NDP Deputy Leader Sol Mamakwa affirmed their support for the six First Nations challenging Ontario's Mining Act in the Superior Court.
The case brought forward by these nations highlights the unconstitutional violations of treaty and equality rights as mining companies continue to stake claims on treaty territories without proper engagement or consent.
"Free, prior, and informed consent isn't just a suggestion; it's a fundamental right,” said Mamakwa. “Yet, time and again, we see governments ignoring this and pushing First Nations to the courts to defend what's rightfully theirs. This pattern of exploitation must end.”
"This government needs to step up and do its job right," Bourgouin added. "First Nations don't deserve to have to fight against governments time and time again. It's time for Doug Ford to stop dragging his feet, start listening, and finally respect the rights and way of life of Indigenous peoples. First Nations have made it clear—no work will happen on their lands without their informed consent, and the NDP supports that."
