Support Real Rent Control and Bill 144 Tenant Protections

Over the past year I’ve met with many, many tenants, advocate groups, and tenant organizations. You helped make Toronto’s rental inequity front page news. You have made it clear you need real rent control and current action is too little; too late.

Early in June I introduced Bill 144: Real Rent Control Act, 2017, in the legislature. If passed, the bill would enact real change; real controls; right now.

Together with other tenants in Toronto we must stop unfair and unaffordable rent increases. We need to stop landlords who want to empty out buildings so that they can charge higher rents to new tenants. That includes blocking any rent increase when major maintenance remains undone.

I want to work with you to change the rent control laws so that tenants have the affordable homes they need.

Thank you,

Peter Tabuns MPP

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:

Whereas there is an affordable rental crisis in Ontario;
Whereas massive loop holes in the current rent control laws have led to unaffordable rental prices;

We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to act to:

• stop massive rent increases,
• end the system that gives landlords incentive to drive people out of their units so they can rent at new much higher rents,
• provide real financial consequences for landlords who fail to maintain their buildings, and
• Pass Bill 144 for Real Rent Control now.
