Ford's letter on schools comes troublingly late: NDP

Published on May 27, 2021

QUEEN'S PARK — NDP Education critic Marit Stiles released the following statement in response to Doug Ford's letter to health and education experts asking if schools are safe to reopen:

"Parents, kids, teachers and education workers are exhausted. Students are struggling with growing mental health and wellbeing challenges, isolation and learning hurdles. They were hoping for news today on when and how schools will safely reopen.

Doug Ford has had many months to build a plan to make schools safe to re-open. Instead, he chose to do nothing for months, to ignore the advice of health and education experts, ignore feedback from frontline education workers, and refuse to spend the money to make schools safe.

It's the end of May, and just now Mr. Ford is asking health and education experts for feedback? Doug Ford needs to stop treating kids' education as an afterthought, and spend what it takes to make schools safe, including smaller class sizes and better ventilation.”
