HIGHER FARES, WORSE SERVICE: FORD GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER PUTS PUBLIC TRANSIT AT RISK

Published on May 17, 2026

QUEEN’S PARK –– Ontario NDP Shadow Minister for Public Transit Tom Rakocevic (Humber River––Black Creek) warns that transit riders are in danger of higher fares and reduced quality of service, thanks to the Ford government's takeover of Ontario's public transit systems via Bill 98:

“Bill 98 is the latest overreach by the control-obsessed Ford government," said Rakocevic. "Life in Ontario has never been more expensive and the last thing people need is to pay more for worse service.

“Ontario deserves a reliable public transit system that is properly funded with decisions that are made in the best interest of the people, not the Premier. The Ford government must withdraw this bill, and work collaboratively with municipalities, transit workers, and riders to build a robust, accessible public transit system that is accountable to Ontarians."
