HAMILTON — NDP Leader Andrea Horwath responded to Ontario’s Science Table findings, published Wednesday, which recommend actions the government could take to prevent COVID-19 infections and deaths in long-term care: “The government’s own experts are echoing what residents, families, frontline staff and countless others have been saying for months. Long-term care homes with underpaid temporary staff and residents crammed three and four to a room are leaving seniors vulnerable, and are resulting in more devastating illness and tragic death. The Doug Ford government seems more interested in saving money than in saving seniors' lives, and that’s got to stop. I’m calling on Ford to implement these recommendations immediately, and do so by hiring 10,000 new long-term care staff, hiking wages permanently for lower-paid staff like personal supports workers, and banning homes from cramming three or four residents into any room.”
