NDP demands review of Ford appointment

Published on November 4, 2022

QUEEN’S PARK – The Official Opposition NDP is demanding a review of the Ford government’s quiet appointment of Mario Cortellucci to the York Police Services Board.

Cortellucci is an ultra-wealthy PC donor and Ford ally who ran for an Italian senate seat in 2018 under a far-right coalition that supported anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigrant, and Islamophobic policies, and called for mass deportations and the closure of hundreds of mosques.

“We have called for Mr. Cortellucci to appear at the Government Agencies committee to face questions, and the government has run out the clock on our request, allowing the appointment to proceed without review,” said Interim Ontario NDP Leader Peter Tabuns. “If Mr. Cortellucci cannot appear before the committee and unequivocally denounce the hateful, anti-immigrant, homophobic and Islamophobic views of the coalition he aligned himself with in his bid for an Italian senate seat, then he should not be given any appointment by any government in Ontario.”
