NDP opposes Ford’s decision to greenlight big rent hikes

Published on September 9, 2022

TORONTO — NDP MPP Jessica Bell says Doug Ford’s choice to greenlight 2.5 per cent rent increases for Ontarians is piling more costs on people already hurting from the rising cost of living.

“People are squeezed more than ever before, and the cost of ever-rising rents in Ontario is a big part of the stress,” said Bell. “It’s dead wrong for Doug Ford to greenlight a rent hike right now. And let’s not forget that Ford already eviscerated rent controls on rental units built after 2018, leaving many households facing unlimited rent hikes.

“It’s got to stop. We need a premier focused on making housing affordable, not a premier taking more money away from people.”

Ford eliminated rent controls on all units built after 2018, and has maintained a system of “vacancy decontrol” that allows rents to rise by any level once a tenant moves out.

The NDP is pushing for a rent stabilization law that bans unlimited increases in between tenants, as well as rent controls on all homes in Ontario.
