NDP statement marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Published on January 27, 2021

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath made the following statement to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day:

QUEEN'S PARK — "On Jan. 27, the world honours the memory of the six million Jewish people murdered in the Holocaust. It is a truth the world can never forget. The six million killed includes the nearly 1,000 Jewish refugees turned away at the Canadian border, many of whom later perished in the Holocaust.

We remember all victims of the Holocaust, which included Roma people, people of diverse sexual and gender identities, people with disabilities and people killed for their political beliefs.

As political leaders, we must ensure future generations are educated about the Holocaust. On behalf of the Ontario NDP, I reaffirm my commitment to countering antisemitism, racism and all forms of hate, intolerance and discrimination.

When the legislature returns, I will table a motion and ask all parties to join me in committing to construct a Holocaust memorial on the grounds of the Ontario Legislature."
