QUEEN’S PARK – The NDP's LGBTQ critic Terence Kernaghan made the following statement to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia:
“On International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we are reminded that equity is a goal we must never lose sight of. We must continue to call out violence, discrimination and hatred experienced by 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and to fight for justice and freedoms for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in our laws and institutions. On this IDAHOTB, we remain committed to improving access to affirming health care, a 2SLGBTQIA+ homelessness prevention strategy, removing profits from long-term care and ensuring 2SLGBTQIA+ folks can be their authentic selves at any age, with pride and without fear. The Ontario NDP has been proud to spearhead legislation to:
- Include gender diverse rights within the Ontario Human Rights Code in 2012
- Ban conversion therapy in 2015
- Support equal parenting rights in 2016
- Introduce Trans Day of Remembrance in 2017
The Ontario NDP and Andrea Horwath proudly stand alongside the 2SLGBTQIA+ community this day and every day to ensure Ontario is a place where all are equal before the law, in our legislature, and everywhere in our great province. Happy IDAHOTB, everyone!”
