Oppose Siting of Nuclear Waste

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:

WHEREAS Nuclear waste is inherently a dangerous thing that if mishandled can cause catastrophic harm;

WHEREAS plans proceed to store large volumes of nuclear waste in Northwestern Ontario with decades of nuclear waste transport planned through the region in the years to come;

WHEREAS virtually all First Nations are clear they are not willing to have nuclear waste stored in their communities or on their traditional lands and have not granted free, prior and informed consent to such transport or storage;

WHEREAS the Grassy Narrows First Nation has identified the nuclear waste storage in Northwestern Ontario as a threat to the headwaters of their community;

WHEREAS those communities were not meaningfully consulted about the dangers of transporting this waste through their communities on unsafe two lane northern roads;

WHEREAS the management of the high level nuclear waste disposal is in the hands of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) which is controlled by Ontario Power Generation, an Ontario government entity,

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, PETITION THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO AS FOLLOWS:
That the Government of Ontario pause the process of creating a nuclear waste repository in First Nations territories and the North
generally until consultations around the storage of and transport of dangerous nuclear waste are completed to the satisfaction of all
First Nations and non-indigenous communities in Ontario affected by that transport and storage.
