QUEEN'S PARK — The Court of Appeal for Ontario has ruled against Doug Ford's legal challenge to carbon pricing to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This is the second court to come to the same conclusion on challenges to federal carbon pricing, following the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan. On behalf of the Ontario NDP, Energy and Climate Change critic Peter Tabuns released the following statement:
"Doug Ford is wasting piles of Ontario's money on an expensive court challenge that's nothing more than a political stunt, and a blowhard talking point. But the real danger in Doug Ford's actions is that he is literally spending Ontario's money to undermine the battle against the climate crisis.
Fires, floods and tornadoes are already ripping through our communities with increased regularity. The climate crisis is raging, and Doug Ford is taking us from bad to worse. For our children and our grandchildren, this is the most important challenge of their generation, and everything is at risk.
Ontario can be a leader in the fight against the climate crisis, and we can create an incredible number of jobs, and a massive amount of economic activity by doing that. By staying beholden to big polluters, Doug Ford is ripping jobs and opportunity away from Ontario, and burning our children's future.
Doug Ford chose the Trudeau carbon price over the carbon market Ontario was already in. We urge him not to blow even more of Ontario's money by appealing this to the Supreme Court of Canada.”
