TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:
WHEREAS the Ontario Science Centre has been a beloved institution and heritage site in Ontario for over 50 years, helping children develop curiosity and a love of science for more than half a century;
WHEREAS Premier Ford’s plans to demolish the existing Science Centre building, which is an architecturally-significant historical landmark, and build a new site at Ontario Place that would be half the size;
WHEREAS The current site serves as a treasured community hub and tourist location that serves the communities of Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park,
WHEREAS Toronto should have landmarks throughout the city, and not just downtown;
WHEREAS The government has refused to reveal how much their plan to relocate the Science Centre will cost, much less provide any numbers, facts, or business cases to explain why this plan was made;
THEREFORE we, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:
- Immediately reverse the decision to demolish and move the Ontario Science Centre, and instead complete the long-delayed repairs to this irreplaceable heritage building, so it can continue to serve the local community and all Ontarians;
- Hold and respect community consultations about the Ontario Science Centre's future.
